Workshop Archives

The current board began their term by revamping the website which has allowed NVRID to archive professional development & social events. This archive lists both comments column and professional development program flyers.

Professional Development

NVRID has been offering workshops presented in (or interpreted into) ASL on the third Saturday every other (odd-numbered) month since September 2010.

Social Events

NVRID alternates a "no-host" Social event with the workshops (also the third Saturday of the month; pattern originally set by Caroline Bass, President 2004-2008).

Flyers for past workshops are listed below; blurbs about all events are located to the right.

For Southern Interpreters, Brenda Cartwright presented "Walk a Mile in My High Heels" which was an all-inclusive mixture of topics from Brenda's many years of experience as an interpreter and interpreter-educator. Many interpreters came from other states including: CA, UT, CO, and MN. Special thanks to Sorenson which took donations and presented them to NVRID.

2011

Dec 17th, 2011  -3rd Saturday -Social at MACAYO'S

NVRID enjoyed a new seating area this month. It was clear by the chatting that there was much to catch up on among the interpreters and their families. NVRID wishes all a Happy New Year!

Nov 19th, 2011 -3rd Saturday (final 2011 Workshop)

"OOPS! Interpreting Mistakes...Avoid Them"

NVRID thanks Summer Patchen for a new and interesting way to show how the CPC (Code of Professional Conduct) can help us avoid embarassing mistakes. A big favorite was the "I assumed" puzzle and the unforgettable stories. Hooray to the north -highest attendance. Great input from all. The treats were a nice bonus.

Oct 15th, 2011  -3rd Saturday -Social at MACAYO'S

NVRID enjoyed a new long-table seating area this month. It was clear by the chatting that there was much to catch up on among the interpreters and their families. Mr. Bodak, generously helped us "wet our whistles" by providing drinks. Thank you, Michael.

Sept 17th, 2011  -3rd Saturday -Workshop

NVRID presented a VOICING workshop with a theatrical twist. Alek Lev's workshop reviewed both theatrical vocal training and ASL to English interpreting aspects to give participants the tools to improve their skill/knowledge base related to "voicing". The workshop required participants to have both English and ASL proficiency.

Even EXTREMELY EXPERIENCED interpreters number this in one of the best workshops they've attended. NVRID thanks Alek for his energy and enthusiastic presentation.

"Interpreters have long debated whether or not interpreting is acting. It is. It just shouldn’t be bad acting. "   -Alek Lev

Aug 20, 2011  -3rd Saturday-Social

NVRID was happy to welcome new faces this month. NVRID also overlapped this event with a board meeting. We thank you for your participation and patience; we don't plan to try to do two things at once again. Big thanks to Mr Bodak who (personally) paid for all soft drinks. What a "sweetie."

July 18-22, 2011 -no events planned due to RID national conference -Atlanta, GA

June 18, 2011  -3rd Saturday-Social

NVRID Social was again a nice time to gather, chat and introduce friends we brought to meet our peers. Even though some regulars were on vacation, we had enough to fill our tables and keep us social through the allotted time. Thank you to all who came out -hope to see you again in August.

May 21, 2011  -3rd Saturday-Double the Workshops

Boundaries (K-12); Intricate Interpretations (K-12)

Richard Brumberg -a favorite K-12, Educational Interpreter presenter came back to Las Vegas to discuss and work through some situations Educational Interpreters face in the K-12 setting.

Members had been asking for & so we provided; shorter workshops. It was members-choice of morning, afternoon, or both timeframes. Workshops and business meeting were all TELECONFERENCED to the NORTH

NVRID provided lunch (North and South) during its annual business meeting (in between the TWO-half-day workshops).

Thank you to all participants. Please let us know if you would like more partial-day workshops in the future.

April 16, 2011 -3rd Saturday- Social at Macayos (W. Charleston)

There was a "card-check" to see who had their NVRID/RID card(s) on them. Congratulations to all who were ready :) "Thank you," to the generous person who picked up the tab on drinks. There were renewals taken care of and we had some new attendees.

March 19, 2011  -Teaming; personalities
This was the third workshop tele-conferenced to northern NV; NVRID was pleased to see the first attendees at that site.
Special thanks to ASL Communication for sponsoring lunch, YUM!!

Alayne Berstler presented "Effective Teaming: To Understand and Be Understood." This workshop, teaching (among other teamwork essentials) about categories of personalities and how to work well together, was well attended. One workshop participant said, "The workshop was fun and interactive! I learned so much about myself, which will help me be a better team interpreter."

February 19, 2011  -3rd SaturdaySocial at Macayos
We had a great time with many new faces. We even had to add an additional table or two (shhh...we still don't think the staff noticed) LOL. It was great to meet some spouses and friends of members. The socials are open to everyone. We just hope you'll let us know you are coming so we can reserve an area large enough. -Great going Nina and Michael: this event has grown each time.

January 15, 2011 "Vague Language" -RID Views cover story-2011

NVRID thanks Daniel Greene for presenting a wonderful workshop on Vague Language (VL).  We learned many reasons for the use of VL, how to use VL, strategies for conveying VL, how RID's Code of Professional Conduct is satisfied by retaining VL. Daniel also offerred exercises to clarify VL, held a Q&A session, and tied up the workshop with time for an open discussion. The discussion here has just begun...and continued onto the cover of the following issue of the RID VIEWS. - Very Impressive, Daniel!

(Due to Post-Secondary-NV budget cuts, our teleconferencing rooms' reservations were not approved. Thank you to DHHARC, Las Vegas for providing a room so the workshop did not have to be cancelled).

2010...

December 18, 2010 - NVRID Social at Macayos.

NVRID thanks all who were in attendance. We enjoyed seeing each other in a situation where we could talk/sign and enjoy some time before the holidays.

November 20, 2010: "Breaking (&Entering) Into Legal Interpreting"

This was the second teleconferenced workshop for this cycle.

One of NVRID's favorites: Xenia Fretter-Woods presented an eye-opening workshop on legal interpreting. Do you know how great a shortage of legally-certified interpreters exists across America? You do if you attended this workshop.

We received information applicable in any settingas well as information specific to the field of legal interpreting. Xenia taught participants how to prepare to take the RID legal certification test (legal certification is SC:L), helped us practice with vocabulary and legal phrases, and we absorbed practical tips that will improve our work regardless of the setting.
- You might even say it was "illegal" to  have missed this workshop :)

October 16, 2010 -first NVRID Social at Macayos.

NVRID thanked all in attendance by providing a round of appetizers.

September 18, 2010 "Keeping Interpreting Safe"

This was the first workshop of the cycle and was tele-conferenced.

A workshop about every aspect of interpreting. A must-attend for every interpreter or student of interpreting. We hope you learned something to keep you safe: either in business, health, personal safety or other...
